What is Razor Burn
and How Can I Prevent It?

Razor burn is inflammation of the skin most commonly caused by friction or shaving. If you've ever shaved your pubic hair down there and instantly felt sensitivity, that's probably razor burn.  Razor burn is annoying and looks like redness, bumps, irritation or discomfort and can feel like chafing or a sunburn. And, for those of us with dry or hypersensitive intimate skin, razor burn in the bikini area can be even more painful. 😤😫😖

At this point, you might be thinking, "Great, now that I have razor burn on my vag, what's the best razor burn remedy?"

First of all, you can't get razor burn on your "vag" AKA "vagina" since it's on the inside, but you can get razor burn on your vulva - the sensitive skin on the outer lips (labia majora) and mound of skin tissue on the pubic bone (mons pubis) - basically where pubic hair normally grows. Other common areas prone to razor burn are faces, necks, underarms, and legs.

Like ingrown hairs, razor burn usually resolves itself over time but who has time to wait in frustration! Here are a few simple steps you can take to prevent razor burn and say sayonara to that pesky pre/post-shaving irritation for a happy, healthy glow below.

6 Tips for Preventing Razor Burn

1. EXFOLIATE

2. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE!

Whatever your grooming game might be – shaving, waxing, sugaring, tweezing – skin hydration is key.

Grooming pubic hair increases your skin's exposure to external sensitivities like unwanted bacteria or irritation from tight yoga pants, so hydrating is a crucial step needed to keep your delicate skin-down-under protected.

However, not all feminine products are created equal. When you use a feminine wash filled with synthetic colorants, fragrances and other ingredients that shouldn't go anywhere near your lady parts, it can make your case of dry vulva skin worse. Since the skin's primary role is to protect the vagina from unwanted bacteria, dry or compromised vulva skin is "weaker" allowing the bad stuff in,  which can negatively affect your vaginal pH balance. Instead, you'll want to opt for feminine products with clean ingredients that actually work.

"While gentle exfoliation is important, don't underestimate the need for hydration! I love Lady Suite's Rejuvenating Botanical Oil as my go-to razor burn remedy because it's rich in Omega Fatty Acids that instantly help soothe, strengthen, and repair compromised skin." - Elise McCarthy , Esthetician, and Owner of Bod Waxing Studio.

3. TRIM IT DOWN

Pubic hair is the thickest hair on your body. Trimming down pubic hair before shaving saves your skin from having to go over it multiple times with the razor. Plus, less hair means less clogging of the razor blade.

4. CHOOSE [YOUR RAZOR] WISELY

When it comes to razors, you get what you pay for. Disposable razors are convenient but raise your chances of razor burn. Say bye-bye Bic and hello to Billie, Flamingo or Lisse Shave, razors made for women, by women.

5. GO WITH THE FLOW

Let's take it back to basics: learning how to shave the hair down there. After cleansing and exfoliating, apply a high-quality shave cream or non-comedogenic shaving oil. With a clean and sharp razor, hold your skin taught and apply small strokes in the direction of your hair growth, not against it. Try to avoid going over the same area multiple times, as this can cause more irritation and increase the likelihood of razor burn in the bikini area.

6. CHANGE YOUR BLADES

At some point, we've all been in that friend's shower (or our own) only to see that the blade is clogged and rusty...gross! Your vulva skin deserves so much better. Change your blades to avoid dull blades that leave you feeling the (razor) burn. Another solution is to try a monthly subscription, like Billie, that offers an automatic blade refill subscription with scheduled deliveries every one, two, or three months, depending on how often you shave.
